911 to the rescue 3/2018
This a heart filled story. On 3/23/18 The Healing Ban received a call from the 911 dispatcher in Bowling Green. It was a Friday night at 6:30 pm and a couple from Canada were headed home with 2 horses. The family was coming from Florida and when they pulled into Kentucky their horse Vic started to colick. The Vet in Kentucky tubed Vic with warm water and mineral oil and sent them on their way. Unfortunately Vic did not move his bowels and by the time they pulled into Bowling Green, Ohio Vic was in severe pain. Luckily the 911 operator Tara Sarver knew The Healing Barn and thought we could help.
The Healing Barn talked to Ross and Bev and asked them how fast they could get their horse to Millbury. Fortunately they were 24 mile away and made it to The Healing Barn within 45 minutes. By that time Vic the horse was slamming himself on the ground in severe pain. The Healing Barn immediately called the Vet to come out, and while we waited we gave Vic IM Bamamine, walked and walked Vic with no a vail. We couldn’t break the cycle of pain. He couldn’t pass gas, he could not move his bowels. His gut sounds were loud and rolling but with no releaf. Soon he was down most of the time with his eyes rolled back into his head. When the Vet came Vic was very very bad. The Vet said I don’t think we can help him, he is very far gone. I can try a different med and if he doesn’t respond and get up you will have to make the decision to put him down. That is not what Ross and Bev wanted to hear of course.
After the high dose pain med, Vic got up and walked for 5 minutes and laid back down again in pain. The Vet gave another big dose of pain med and Vic got up and stayed up. When he was up the Vet was able to tube Vic once again with warm water and mineral oil. By the grace of God Vic stayed up and started moving his bowels the next morning.
Vic was saved by a community that came together.
Vic, Bev and Ross stayed at The Healing Barn until Sunday until Vic was stable. The family left to go home and all was well.
