Treating a horse with E.P.M.
Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis
Definition:
EPM is an infectious, neurological disease that results in propioceptive deficits, spinal ataxia, rear end weakness, and asymmetric hind quarter atrophy.
Diagnosis:
If you feel your horse has EPM, please consult your veterinarian. There are other diseases that can mimic EPM’s clinical signs and with a simple blood test you can either include or exclude EPM. A few years ago veterinarians used to do a spinal tap to diagnose EPM, this was expensive and not consistently accurate.
Treatment:
To begin treatment you should know a few helpful tips. Horses with EPM will progress much better if they are in good shape and are exercised regularly. However keep in mind that stress can cause the EPM to flare up, so moderate exercise and low stress levels will help your horse to recover to their full potential.
There are several different medications available through your vet that are quite costly and do not have a great success rate. Please consult your vet and make the best decision for your horse!
Our Successful Treatment Plan:
We personally have been very successful with several horses by treating them with ALL NATURAL remedies. We have had great success with using herbal mixtures to help support healthy muscles, joints, and tendons, while also boosting and creating a healthy immune system allowing the body to defend itself from further progression. Adding a daily vitamin and mineral is also vital, our particular mixture has over 60 different minerals and vitamins. For success when treating EPM, remember the better health and shape your horse is in, the better chances they have to recover.
Also remember daily exercise, low stress, and a little extra TLC!
